Collision hospitalizes Cheney man

A collision between a car and a fire truck sent a Cheney man to a local hospital with injuries late Monday afternoon.

According to a Washington State Patrol press memo, at approximately 2:20 p.m., Mark A. McElrath of Cheney was traveling westbound in a 1983 Dodge Ram pickup in inside lane three of Interstate 90 when he changed lanes to his right near the State Route 195 interchange. McElrath subsequently struck a 1992 red and white Spartan pumper fire truck driven by Steven E. McMullen of Post Falls, causing McElrath’s pickup to roll onto its top.

McElrath was injured and transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center. A passenger in the fire truck, Crystal Marie Rogers of Spokane, was also injured and taken to Sacred Heart. McMullen was uninjured.

McElrath’s vehicle was totaled and towed while the fire truck was driven from the scene. WSP officials listed the cause of the collision as unsafe lane change, with charges pending.
