Deadlines for submitting West Plains Briefs is noon Monday. Briefs should be under 100 words if possible. Briefs may be edited for length.

Memorial Day deadline changes

The Cheney Free Press will be closed Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day. Therefore, deadlines for submissions for the May 29 edition have been changed. The deadline for legal notices is Friday, May 23, by 5 p.m. The deadline for letters to the editor and public service announcements for the West Plains Briefs is Friday at noon.

The Cheney Free Press will be open again for business Tuesday, May 27, at 8 a.m.

SCLD Memorial Day closures

All Spokane County Library District facilities will be closed Monday, May 26, to observe Memorial Day. Regular hours resume Tuesday, May 27. SCLD online services remain available 24/7.

Cheney book club meeting

“Sarah’s Key,” a novel, is the May selection of the Book Discussion Group of the Friends of the Cheney Community Library. The group meets Tuesday, May 27, at 7 p.m. at the library.

“Sarah’s Key” tells the true events of the Holocaust in France in World War II. Julia, an American journalist married to a Frenchman and living in Paris, discovers the connection between her husband’s family and a Jewish family taken away during the Holocaust.

A little Jewish girl, Sarah, carries a key, the clue to a painful secret. Julia’s investigations lead to horror and finally a resolution.

School board work session

The Cheney School District board of directors has agreed to hold a school board work session after its second regularly schedule meeting in May to interview board student adviser candidates. The work session will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, after the conclusion of the regular meeting, which begins at 4 p.m.

The meeting and work session will be at Snowdon Elementary School, 6323 S. Holly Road.
