Girls' tennis goes 1-2 in league competition
The Cheney high girls’ tennis team continued to play through their season, going 1-2 in Great Northern League competition.
The Blackhawks first defeated East Valley to pick up their first league win of the season, 5-2.
Cheney swept East Valley in singles competition. In the No. 1 spot, Katelynn Smedley shut out Brittany Nelsen, 6-0, 6-0.
Rachel Hansen, Grace Phol and Linsey Sweitzer won their matches.
At No. 3 doubles, Sadie Knutson and Shayla Payne battled back after losing the first set to win their match.
“All the singles were the dominating factor and No. 3 doubles really kept their composure and shined,” girls’ tennis head coach Jason Overland said.
The next day the Blackhawks endured a 6-1 loss to the Pullman Greyhounds at home. Smedley was the lone winner for Cheney.
Following the weekend, Cheney lost to Colville, 6-1, with only Smedley winning her match at the No. 1 spot, keeping her unbeaten streak alive.
After league matches against West Valley, April 29, and Clarkston, May 1, the Blackhawks will compete in the Inland Empire Tournament, May 2-3.
