The Cheney high school boys’ tennis team had a roller coaster of a week as they went 2-1 in competition.
The Blackhawks began the week by winning a tough Great Northern League duel against East Valley, 4-3.
Britton Williams picked up the only singles win for the Blackhawks as he beat the Knights’ Brenton Goodwater.
“Britton looked really strong,” Cheney High boys’ tennis head coach Jesse Erickson said. “He played to his strengths and attacked the net. He’s a tall guy, so it’s hard for opponents to get the ball past him.”
In doubles action, Cheney swept East Valley. At the No. 1 doubles spot, Shogo Starr and Adam Passey racked up a victory over Dakota Sargent and Sean Haight. Tristan Bennett and Talmadge Dickson picked up their first league win of the season, as did Jordan Kauwe - playing doubles for the first time this season - and Luke Huguenin.
The next day Pullman defeated Cheney 7-0, in a league match that was postponed from the week before.
“Pullman is really strong in both singles and doubles, but the scores didn’t indicate how close the games were,” Erickson said.
After their loss to the Greyhounds, the Blackhawks defeated Medical Lake in a non-league dual, 6-1.
The Blackhawks beat the Cardinals across the board in singles competition. Kauwe, Mason Van Stone and Ryan Axtell all snapped their short losing streaks while Williams improved his singles record to 3-0.
In doubles, Shogo Starr and Passey rebounded from their loss in Pullman to pick up a win at No. 2 while Huguenin and Brandon Foster picked up a victory at the No. 3 spot.
Erickson said that Van Stone and Axtell would vacate their singles spots and move to the doubles spot for the remainder of the season in order to get ready for districts.
The Blackhawks will hit the road to take on West Valley, April 29 and Clarkston, May 1. Following these duals, Cheney will compete in the Inland Empire Tournament, May 2-3.
“This week will be a good telltale sign of how we’re going to end up for league matches,” Erickson said. “My guys are ready for that. I’m excited to see what we can do.”
