Blackhawk track busy in first week back


Cheney track and field teams wasted little time in getting busy with competition after a long spring break layoff. The Blackhawks opened up Great Northern League meet competition Thursday, traveling to Pullman where the Greyhounds prevailed 106-35 over the Cheney boys and 75-70 over the girls.

Abby Hammermeister, KD Skillingstad, Johanna Sherman, Kinsey Pease and Courtney Schwendiman all notched first place finishes against the Greyhounds. Hammermeister won the 800-meter dash in 2 minutes, 47.40 seconds, Skillingstad the 100 hurdles in 17.39, Sherman the 300 hurdles in 51.55, Pease the javelin with a toss of 107 feet, 3 inches and Schwendiman the triple jump with a leap of 32-01.

Placing second was Sherman in the 100 hurdles, Mattie McNair in the 3,200, Katie McGourin in the shot put, Hailey Ottosen in the discus, Rylie Pease in the javelin, Kayla Lemlin in the high jump Breann Johnson in the long jump and Skillingstad in the triple. Third was Rylie Crawford in the 400, Alexis Schmidt in the 1,600, Kinsey Pease in the high jump, Sarah Pierson in the long jump and Savannah Hyde in the triple.

All three Cheney relay teams finished second.

Steaven Zachman notched a pair of wins for the boys, taking the 800 in 2:11.60 and the 1,600 in 4:48.98. Sam Schreiber brought home first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.55.

Schreiber was second in the 100, with Chase Reed third. Kyle Lerch finished second in the 1,600 and 3,200, with Kaleb Lerch third in the 3,200 while Austynn Maddox was third in both the 110 and 300 hurdles. The 4x400 relay team of Carson Kerr, Drake Johnson, Kyle Lerch and Zachman was second.

In the field, second-place finishes went to Keenan Williams in the high jump and Houston Moezulski in the pole vault. Third place finishes went to Brett Wyborney in the shot and Peter Bitz in the javelin.

Saturday the squads separated, with many staying in Cheney for the annual Big Red Classic and a few heading south for the 107-team Pasco Invitational. The Blackhawks boys and girls combined for 10th place overall in the 15-team Big Red, the girls eighth with 32 points and the boys 12th with nine points.

Mead was the combined meet winner with the Panther girls topping the female team scores while Mt. Spokane topped the boys.

Kendyl Cone brought home the only first-place finish for either Cheney team, taking the 100 in 13.02. Hyde was second in the triple jump (32-02), with Brooks fourth in the 3,200 and Lemelin tied for sixth with Moses Lake’s Alexa Sandman in the high jump.

The 4x200 relay team finished sixth while the 4x100 team was seventh.

For the boys, Schreiber took fifth in the 300 hurdles while Gaige Felix was eighth in the triple jump. The 4x100 relay team was seventh.

Kinsey Pease was the only Blackhawk placing in the top 10 at Pasco, taking sixth in the javelin with a toss of 126-00.

Also competing were Zachman (800, 36th; 1,600, 12th), Kyle Lerch (3,200, 20th), Sherman (100 hurdles, 31st; 300 hurdles, 28th), Wyborney in the shot (32nd) Sasha Johnson in the discus (26th) and Jamie Bradley in the pole vault. The girls distance medley relay team (1,200, 400, 800, 1,600) of Alexis Schmidt, McNair, Hammermeister and Sherman was 18th.
