NJHS welcomes new members

The Medical Lake Middle School chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) welcomed 47 new members at an induction ceremony, April 18.

This year's inductees were primarily comprised of sixth-graders, as well as seventh- and eighth-graders who enrolled at the middle school earlier in the year.

To join NJHS, students had to have a 3.5 GPA. Once they meet the academic requirement and are notified by facility, they need to complete the candidate application.

During the induction ceremony, the middle school's NJHS executive board members president Hannah Petek, vice president Emilie Browning, and secretary Justyce Cogswel lit candles and explained the standards of the society: scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship and character. There was also a musical performance from Abigail Galunas and Megan Goertz, who are both seventh-grade members of the NJHS.

After the new inductees received their plaques, NJHS co-adviser Theodore Koch led them in the society's pledge. Medical Lake Middle School principal Sylvia Campbell accepted the pledge and welcomed the new members.

NJHS co-adviser Judy Dunbar said these students are not only outstanding in the classroom, but also have good character skills.

"It will be exciting next year when they're engaging with the community," Dunbar said.

Every year, NJHS chapters are required to complete a service project for their school or the community.

Kaye Rosenbeck attended the ceremony with her daughter Elizabeth to watch her grandchildren Molly and Nicholas Rosenbeck be inducted into the NJHS. She said both her grandchildren work hard in the classroom and participate in extracurricular activities.

"It's not easy to achieve an honor like this, especially in this day and age," Rosenbeck said.
