Looking Back

 

While most fishermen at area lakes caught their limits of trout on Sunday April 15, 1984, a few lucky anglers at every lake hooked some real lunkers. The above fish were taken about 5:30 a.m. Sunday April 15, 1984 at Williams Lake Resort. Steve Templeton of Colfax, left, took his 4 1/2-pound, 21 1/2-inch rainbow off the dock with a worm for bait. Scott Pittman, also of Colfax, right, hooked his 6 1/2-pound, 25 1/2-inch, fish while trolling with a Mepps spinner.

Sunset Elementary School students took part in a tree planting ceremony on Arbor Day that was part of Airway Heights' designation as a "Tree City USA" community.

Cheney's Relay For Life had already reached its goal of raising $48,000 with a month to go before the actual event.

Midfielder Chad Thornton scored the game-winning goal in the 21stt minute as Cheney defeated Mt. Spokane 2-1 in a soccer match played in Cheney.

April 21, 1994

The formation of a lake management district called "Creedence Clear Lake Revival" by resident Jerry Pitts was seen as the first step towards getting Clear Lake cleaned up of some of the pollution problems that had been discovered.

Fifth DistrictCongressman Tom Foley was recently honored by the Cheney School District for his help in acquiring $1.5 million in federal assistance towards the $2.6 total cost to remodel Windsor Elementary School. Foley was presented with a plaque from Cheney Superintendent Phil Snowdon.

Medical Lake baseball remained unbeaten at 8-0 and were facing a key contest against 7-1 Colfax for the supremacy of the Northeast A League.

April 19, 1984

Fishing season opened in the area with many anglers taking home significant hauls. Among them were a pair of Colfax residents, Scott Pittman who hauled in a 6 1/2-pound rainbow and Steve Templeton who landed a 4 1/2-pound fish.

Ellen Proctor, a Cheney resident since 1941, was named as one of 36 area residents who will vie for Senior Citizen of the Year in Spokane County.

Cheney High School's Denny Humphrey was named District 7 coach of the year following a fourth place finish at the state AA tournament in Tacoma and qualified himself for state AA coach of the year.

April 17, 1964

 One women was burned to death and two homes destroyed in separate fires in the Cheney area. Hulda Willett, 70, was the fatality in the blaze that destroyed her home on Spotted Road near Fish Lake.

Eastern Washington State College was preparing for a visit from Washington Gov. Albert Rosellini who will got a first-hand look at how the state spent $5 million on two new residence halls and the Tawanka Commons food service center.

Cheney's Dave Nicol struck out 15 and pitched a 2-hit 7-0 shutout over Liberty High in a nonleague baseball game.
