Lady Hawks wallop West Valley 20-1 in GNL softball

Cheney travels to Colville for showdown for first place Saturday

Cheney High's softball team headed into spring break on a high note, thanks to a 20-1, five-inning victory over visiting Great Northern League rival West Valley last Thursday.

The Lady Hawks really got all they would need in the first inning, opening the scoring on Amy Anderson's one-out RBI double down the line in left, followed by Shay Turner's 2-RBI double up the middle to center. Julia Boyd's two-out single into the centerfield-right field gap scored Turner to make it 4-0.

Cheney added two more in the third on a two-out, 2-RBI double by Boyd, and then blew the game open with 14 runs in the fourth. Boyd was 4 for 4 with 5 RBIs, with Anderson going 3 for 3, 2 RBIs and four runs, Turner 2 for 5 and 5 RBIs and Adrianna Suiter 2 for 3.

Boyd got the win on the mount to run her record to 4-1 this season.

The win gives the Lady Hawks a 5-1 mark overall, 4-1 in league play and second place in the GNL. The team is taking a couple days off over spring break before resuming practice Thursday and Friday in preparation for Saturday's doubleheader at GNL-leading Colville, 4-0, 5-0.

The Indians have a doubleheader sweep of Deer Park and single victories over West Valley, 12-2, and East Valley, 10-2, in league play. Colville swept the three-game series last year with Cheney en route to a 23-3 record, GNL title and appearance at the 2A State Tournament in Selah where they went 2-2.
