Students and their parents packed the Medical Lake High School Gym, April 3, as the school district held its 15th annual book festival.
Every child who came to the event received at least eight new books. According to Kim Headrick, director of teaching and learning, the district gave away over 900 new books at the event.
In order to receive their books, students participated in activities such as cup stacking, bowling and literature trivia.
Headrick said the festival gave kids a chance to not only add books to their shelves, but also something to read during spring break.
In addition to the new books, the Medical Lake Dollars for Scholars chapter donated around 1,400 used books. There were also door prizes and drawings at the festival.
Author Suzanne Selfors, who has written titles such as "To Catch a Mermaid," "Fortune's Magic Farm" and "The Rain Dragon Rescue" was a guest author at the event. Selfors, from Bainbridge Island, had also visited the elementary schools to tell students about her journey of becoming an author.
"I want to inspire children to create their own stories and I've had parents telling me that their kids are doing just that," Selfors said.
