Weathering the weather proved to be the toughest battle at last Saturday's Ezra Gordon Invitational track meet last Saturday in Colville.

The meet, which attracted 23 girls teams, plus another 22 on the boy's side, including Medical Lake, saw lightning twice delay the event and finally lead to early cancellation of distance events.

But despite the early end, the beginning and middle had notable accomplishments according the Cardinals' co-coach Gene Blankenship.

"We had a pretty good day, (both) boys and girls," Blankenship said. "If we could have gotten the 32(00) and the 4x4(00) in I think we could have finished second." As it was the Cardinal boys were fourth with 49 points behind leader Deer Park's 78.5, the 70 from West Valley – both 2A schools – and Northeast A Freeman at 58.

As per Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association rules, once a lightning strike occurs a mandatory 30-minute event delay takes place.

"So we come back and start the meet and then they're lining up the guys for the 32 - they're on the line ready to start - and then there's another lightning strike," Blankenship explained and the meet was cancelled.

It was what took place prior to the afternoon delays, however, that made the trip north most worthwhile.

Speedster Tellas Johnson scored a pair of big victories for the Cardinals. He won the 100 and 400-meter sprints and the latter victory came in his first-ever time in the open 400, Blankenship said. Normally Johnson runs as part of the 4x4 relay team.

Johnson ran a 10.9- second time in the 100 meters to win it, a PR for him.

The Cardinals took a limited number of girls to Colville, but got a great effort.

Maleeka Wegner ran her first-ever 3,200 meter race, collected a fourth place in a time of 12 minutes, 39 seconds and behind the 11:23 of Sierra Speiker from Oroville

Wegner's initial venture into that distance put her No. 6 spot on the all-time Medical Lake list for the 3,200.

Senior Cameron Peake was third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.84, behind the 41.90 from winner Kip Craig from Bridgeport.

The 4x100 relay team of Tyler Garrett, Jackson Tappero, Jared Wright and RJ Viloria were second in that race with a time of 46.06. West Valley of Spokane won in a time of 44.17.

The Cardinals will compete this Friday, April 4 in the Deer Park Invitational starting at noon.
