Cheney girls' tennis goes 3-0 in jamboree at Moses Lake

The Cheney girls’ tennis team began their season on a high note as they headed to Moses Lake for a jamboree, March 15.

The Blackhawks went undefeated in competition, defeating Ellensburg, 4-2; Othello, 3-1 and Moses Lake, 4-2.

Cheney picked up several wins in singles competition.

At No. 1 singles, Katelynn Smedley won all three of her matches. Rachel Hansen, at No. 2, went 2-1 for the day, losing her last match 7-6. Grace Phol, No. 3, was undefeated at 2-0 and Linsay Sweitzer, at No. 4, went 1-1.

In doubles action, the pair of Lenanna Eik and Kaitlyn Sweeney, No. 1, went 2-1 in competition.

In No. 2 doubles, Sadie Knutson and Shayla Payne dropped their first two matches and won their third, 6-3.

Head coach Jason Overland said the team started slow at first, but became more comfortable throughout the competition.

“We finished strong and I was very pleased,” Overland said. “We played a lot of good teams with good players and they were well coached.”

The Blackhawks will host Medical Lake, March 20, at 3 p.m. They will head to Freeman to play the Scotties, March 21.
