The Cheney baseball team opened their season with a March 15 doubleheader against the Mustangs in Prosser.

In the first game, the Blackhawks defeated the Mustangs 9-6.

Head coach Mike Cagle said Cheney had several big plays on offense during the first game. Tanner "Bubba" Smith scored two runs and laid down a squeeze bunt to tie the game in the fifth inning. The Blackhawks scored five runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead.

In addition to Smith, Josh Arthur had two RBIs, one single and one double. Kyle Jones, Sawyer Sims, and Ty Graham had RBI singles.

Cagle said the team, especially Smith and Sims, played well on defense in their first outing.

"We haven't been outside much (due to weather) and we only had one practice on the baseball field, but we played solid defense," Cagle said.

In the second game, the Mustangs defeated the Blackhawks 9-8

Kyle Krieger had two RBI doubles in the first inning, which helped the Blackhawks get a five-run lead. Cheney would not score until the sixth where they picked up three more runs. However, Prosser came back to tie the game in the fifth before taking the lead in the bottom of the sixth.

"That game started out hot, but in the later innings we went cold," Cagle said.

Cagle said this year's team is one of the better ones he has coached. He hopes the loss in the second game will not "bog down the team."

The Blackhawks will host Clarkston in a doubleheader, Saturday, March 22, at noon and 2 p.m.

"They have a very good coach and good baseball players," Cagle said. "We're looking forward to that."
