The Medical Lake Cardinals won the 1964 Northeast A League boy's basketball championship with a 16-1 league record and finished 19-2 overall following their 75-66 loss to Elma at the state A tournament title game in Tacoma. Eastern Washington qualified for the school's first-ever trip to the NCAA basketball tournament following their 71-59 win over Northern Arizona. The Eagles, 17-12 and a 15th seed, would face Oklahoma State, 27-3 and a No. 2 seed in Kansas City.

A disturbed man wielding a hatchet held a clerk at bay in FHL Liquidators. Once police officer Dave Mather arrived, drew his sidearm and ordered the man to drop the hatchet he did so and was arrested.
