The Medical Lake Cardinals won the 1964 Northeast A League boy's basketball championship with a 16-1 league record and finished 19-2 overall following their 75-66 loss to Elma at the state A tournament title game in Tacoma. Eastern Washington qualified for the school's first-ever trip to the NCAA basketball tournament following their 71-59 win over Northern Arizona. The Eagles, 17-12 and a 15th seed, would face Oklahoma State, 27-3 and a No. 2 seed in Kansas City.

A disturbed man wielding a hatchet held a clerk at bay in FHL Liquidators. Once police officer Dave Mather arrived, drew his sidearm and ordered the man to drop the hatchet he did so and was arrested.

Problems at Medical Lake's skate park had neighbors up in arms and they voiced their displeasure over the situation at a recent City Council meeting.

March 17, 1994

The Cheney School District's latest maintenance and operations levy funding schools for an additional $3.85 million in 1995 and $3.95 million in 1996, passed 1,522-803, or by a 65-34 percent margin.

A recent state investigation of Sherrie's Daycare Center in Cheney found the business did not violate any laws or regulations.

After 18 years as head coach and the builder of Eastern Washington University's women's basketball program, Bill Smithpeters announced his retirement after compiling a 290-227 record.

March 15, 1984

Cheney voters were being asked to pass a two-year school levy on March 20 that would collect $975,000 in 1985 and $984,000 in 1986.

Longtime EWU professor George Stahl, 70, died at the Cheney Care Center of natural causes. Stahl, an instructor of physics, joined the faculty in 1947 and was responsible for developing the school's planetarium.

The Cheney boy's basketball team earned a fourth place in the state 2A tournament with wins over Battle Ground 72-58 and Port Angeles 44-42 following an opening day 58-45 loss to Chief Sealth. Marty Jessett's 12-foot jump shot with a second to play was the difference in the Port Angeles win.

March 13, 1964

 Councilman George Fisher topped all vote getters in the recent municipal vote earning 208 votes. Nolan Brown retained the mayor's seat as all incumbents were returned to office.

A former Eastern Washington State College student, Bruce Cochran of Palouse, was fined $106 and given five days in jail and had his drivers license revoked after being apprehended for driving 75 mph down Elm Street in Cheney and eventually crashing his vehicle.

Following their runner-up finish in the state 1A basketball tournament in Tacoma, losing to Elma 75-66, the Medical Lake Cardinals coached by Ken Mathison, were given an escort into town by fire and police cars. Following the tournament, ML players Gary Glasgow, Jim Hillbrick and Bob Marsalis were all named to the all-state team.
