Cardinal wrestlers fail to place at Mat Classic

Medical Lake senior Ricky Petersen advanced two rounds and added one additional match in the consolation bracket in last weekend’s Mat Classic XXVI.

Petersen, a senior at 145 pounds, won his first match 7-3 over Andy Madsen of South Whidby. He lost his second match 9-2 to the two-time state champion, Roberto Orosco of Connell, and his third match 12-5 to Stephen Spading of Kalama.

Also competing was sophomore Nick Reed at 113 pounds. He lost his first match to Alvaro Ortiz of Forks by pin in the third period. Reed won his second match over Flavio Sandoval of Kionna Benton by pin in the second period but lost his third match by pin to Miguel Canales of Warden in the second period.

“The wrestlers we took to Tacoma wrestled well but needed one more win to place,” Medical Lake head coach Sam Petersen said. Blaine edged Forks 110.5-109 for the team title in the 1As that drew representatives from 51 schools. Northeast A League Lakeside was fourth with 80 points and Freeman fifth at 78. The Cardinals were 39th with five points.

Looking ahead already to next year, Petersen knows things could be a challenge.

“With Colville and Deer Park coming into the league it will be probably the toughest 1A league in the state for wrestling, so we have our work cut out for us,” Petersen said. Deer Park won the 2A title 109-104 over Sedro Woolley with Colville seventh with 78 points.
