Cheney School District’s Westwood Middle School will be the site of an attempt at a new Guinness Book of World Records Saturday, March 1, as part of the West Coast Conference Wheelchair Basketball championships. Participants will be attempting to set the record for the most consecutive wheelchair basketball free throws in one minute. The competition takes place at the conclusion of the first day of play between eight teams and 100 athletes looking for a slot in the wheelchair basketball national championships April 3-6 in Louisville, Ky.
The current record for most wheelchair free throws in one minute is 25, which was set Feb. 14, 2008 at the NBA All-Star Jam Session in New Orleans. The record is co-held by Jeff Griffith and Trooper Johnson, who will be at Westwood defending his record as a coach with the Junior Road Warriors from Berkeley, Calif.
Beside the Berkeley team there will also be teams from Spokane, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Denver, Los Angeles and San Diego competing in the two-day tournament.
