Memorial for EWU students Monday
Eastern Washington University is hosting a memorial service for the two students killed early last Friday morning in an accident on Highway 195.
Nancy Zepeda Zarate, 21 and Ashley Gonzales, 21, were not wearing seatbelts and declared deceased at the scene of the accident according to the Washington State Patrol report.
Erica Polito Mosso, 21, another EWU student was transported by MedStar to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane.
Carmen Gomez Villalpando, 22, was treated for her injuries at Whitman Hospital and has been released.
All of the students were participants in the Chicano Studies program and heavily involved in campus activities. Three of them, including Zarate, came through the CAMP program for children of migrant workers.
“They were very well liked,” Dave Meany, EWU media relations director said of the students.
In a letter to the campus, President Rodolfo Arévalo recalled the leadership and influence that those students are leaving behind and “their loss will be felt campus wide.”
The memorial service will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the Showalter Auditorium and it will be open to the campus community.
