Lady Hawks end season with back-to-back losses at Clarkston

Apparently losing Saturday’s tiebreaker in a fourth-quarter rally by Colville didn’t sit well with the Clarkston girls’ basketball team.

The Bantams took out their frustrations of being denied the Great Northern League’s No. 2 seed and second round bye via a 53-51 loss to the Indians, by eliminating the sixth-seeded Cheney High girls 71-49 in opening round playoff action Monday, Feb. 17. The Lady Hawks stayed within striking distance for most of the game, trailing by three at intermission and seven heading into the fourth quarter, but were outscored 26-11 in the final frame.

Cheney was led in scoring by the 26 points of junior guard Kendyl Cone while Clarkston sophomore post Jaclyn Meyers turned in a game-high 32 points. Bantams’ junior wing Brooke Morrow added 10 points, the only other player on either roster in double digit scoring.

It was the second time in five days the two teams faced each other. Last Thursday, Feb. 13 the Bantams fought off a pesky, upset-minded Cheney team 51-42, outscoring the Lady Hawks 14-7 in the fourth quarter for the win.

Cone led all scorers with 16 points, with Megan McDowell adding 10 for the Lady Hawks.

Cheney finished the season 3-9 in league play, 5-15 overall in head coach Shannon Roots first season. The Lady Hawks lose three seniors to graduation: Claire Lunde, Shyann Morton and Shasha Johnson, but have six juniors and one sophomore who should return next season with a lot of varsity experience.
