Cheney and West Plains area residents can take the first step to save a life by joining the “Be The Match Registry” between 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today (Friday), Feb. 21, at the Cheney Fire Station, 611 Fourth St.
A simple cheek swab is all that is needed to determine if you could be the one to save one of thousands of patients who may be in need of a bone marrow transplant. You’ll only be contacted if you’re a match for someone in need. We are seeking 18-44 year olds, in good health, that are willing to donate to any one in need to come out and join the Be The Match Registry.
In February 2011, 7-year-old Spokane resident, London Bowater was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She has done extremely well and was three and a half months away from finishing her treatment when on Jan 1, 2014 the family got the heart wrenching news that her leukemia has returned.
She will be starting all over with a more intense chemotherapy to get her back into remission in preparation for treatment. While a cell source was recently identified for London, her family is still deeply committed to helping the other 12,000 patients searching for a match.
The Cheney Fire Dept. and the Jada Bascom Foundation are organizing this event.
