Blackhawks fall in GNL action to East Valley, at Colville
The Cheney High boys’ basketball team dropped two more Great Northern League games last week, falling 63-41 in the home finale Tuesday against East Valley and 64-40 Thursday at Colville.
The Blackhawks hung with the Knights (6-5 GNL, 11-8 overall) throughout the first half, trailing at intermission by six, 24-18. In the final 16 minutes, however, Cheney’s offense went south while East Valley’s, led by J.T. Phelan’s game-high 24 points, outscored the Blackhawks 39-23 for the win.
Cheney was led by Alex Berman’s 14 points, the only Blackhawk in double figures, while sophomore Jamiel Worthem added eight.
Thursday the Blackhawks rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to pull within eight, 38-31, heading into the fourth quarter at Colville. But the Indians (4-7, 9-9), behind the 19 points and 21 rebounds of 6-foot-9-inch senior forward Matt Hubbard, outscored Cheney 26-9 in the final period for the win. Colville also got double-digit scoring from Tevyn Holling, 16 points, and Lukyn Holling, 15 points.
Berman led Cheney offensively with 19 points while Brett Wyborney added 12.
Cheney falls to 1-10 in league play and 4-15 overall with one game remaining. The Blackhawks travel to second-ranked Clarkston (8-2, 16-2) Thursday for the season finale.
Clarkston upset top-ranked Pullman 57-51, and faces a tough road game Tuesday at GNL third-place West Valley (6-4, 13-5). At 1-10, Cheney is a game and a half back of Deer Park (2-8, 6-12) in the race for the league’s sixth and final playoff spot.
The Stags split the regular season series with Cheney, and have games at home against Colville and on the road at West Valley remaining.
