Medical Lake wrestlers got into the Northeast A League dual meet win column last Thursday earning a 60-24 win at Riverside.
The Cardinals got seven wins via pins in the 14 weight classes. They included: Nick Reed (112 pounds), Seth Rojas (126), Mathew Peterson (138), Ricky Petersen (145), Gabe Wolfe (152), Jackson Tappero (189) and Christian Keole 195. Hudson Petek (160), Ian O’Brien (220) and Ryne Reed (285) all won by forfeit.
“Most of our guys wrestled very aggressively and competed well,” Cardinals’ head coach Sam Petersen said.
The individual wins help improve chances for a number of Cardinal wrestlers to move into postseason. The top-four placers in the regular season will advance to districts atMedical Lake Saturday, Feb. 8.
A sub-district event takes place Thursday, Feb. 6 at Chewelah. That competition will allow the top-four finishers an opportunity to work their way to the district tournament.
Ricky Petersen, and possibly Nick Reed and Ian O’Brien, are wrestlers their coach thinks will finish high enough to be able to skip the sub-district. But everything will be decided when Medical Lake travels to Newport tonight to meet the Grizzlies and Kettle Falls in the league final.
“We have all our wrestlers at the weights they will wrestle in postseason and hope to stay healthy,” Petersen said.
