In 2013, Airway Heights applied for and received a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture to install the first phase of trees in Aspen Grove Park Site.

The first phase of the project began in October 2013. Environment West commenced the first phase of the project in October 2013. The project was broken into three phases of planting 26 trees per day. The tree planting portion of the project was finished Oct. 10. The remainder of the project, which consisted of watering the trees, spreading of mulch a and cleaning up the site, was finished Oct. 14.

The second phase will install the remaining coniferous trees at the site.

The Airway Heights City Council approved of a proposal for a professional services agreement with SPVV Landscape Architects for Aspen Grove, Phase 2 Tree Planting.

According to the proposal, the services will include a project and bid specifications for the project. SPVV will use Phase 1 construction documents and planting plan as a basis for the Phase 2 planting plan to put in approximately 50 coniferous trees at Aspen Grove. SPVV estimates the cost of project will be between $40,000-$45,000.

SPVV has created several projects for in the past for the cities of Cheney and Spokane.

J.C. Kennedy said the goal is to coordinate the Phase 2 Tree Planting with Airway Heights’ Arbor Day activities.

“Everything will depend on the bids that come in,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy added said that the project will not take more than seven to 10 days to complete.
