Memorial program to host Jan. 25 ceremony at Washington State Veterans Cemetery

The Veterans Military Tribute Program will host its first event of 2014, Jan. 25, at the Committal Shelter, at 1 p.m., at the Washington State Veterans Ceremony, 21702 West Espanola Road.

The program honors deceased veterans from the community who did not previously receive military burial honors. The ceremony will include an unfurling of the United States flag by the Air National Guard (ANG) honor guard, a rifle volley from the United States Air Force honor guard and the playing of “Taps.”

The last ceremony was in November 2013. According to Rudy Lopez, Director of the state Veteran Cemetery, the ANG decided not to hold a ceremony in December due to conflicted scheduling around the holidays. Lopez mentioned that January ceremony would honor 75 veterans since it will cover a 60-day period. He added that some ceremonies allow family members to speak about their loved ones.

The ceremony will open up with an invocation with Richard Maguire, a volunteer minister, who will also preside over the closing prayers during the ceremony. Chaplain Wesley S. Anderson, VFW Post 51 and Commander Ted Wright will speak at the ceremony.

The shelter is not heated and Lopez cautions visitors to dress appropriately for cold weather.
