Hawks lose to Stags, prep for Hounds

The Cheney Blackhawks wrestling team traveled to Deer Park to compete in a dual match, Jan. 8. The final score was Deer Park 44, Cheney 30 with the Stags making five pins.

Despite losing the dual in points, several Blackhawk wrestlers emerged victorious in their matches

Josh Wessels, who captured first place in the Blackhawk Invitational at 170 pounds, continued his winning streak after he defeated Matt Miller by decision, 3-0. According to head coach Brad Rasmussen, this was a good win for Wessels as Miller is a Tri-State placer.

Coming off of his second-place finish at the Cheney Invitational, Vern Sanderson scored a decision over Neil Lockwood, 8-2.

In the 106-pound division, Braden Worth pinned Joey Edwards. At 195 pounds, Michael Ferguson scored a pin over Jacob Boswell.

At 152 pounds, Ryan Ward gained a measure of payback after be pinned Jacob Overton, who defeated Ward at the Freeman Invite back in December 2013.

Rasmussen said the dual was tough, as the team has been fighting sickness and injuries these last two weeks.

“Had we been full strength it would have been fun to go toe-to-toe with Deer Park,” Rasmussen said. “We saw a lot of improvement with the kids, even the ones that lost so that was encouraging too. From here we just need to keep focused and get better every single day.”

The Blackhawks will face the Pullman Greyhounds in the next dual, at Cheney. (Results from that meet will be published in the Jan. 23 edition of the Cheney Free Press.)
