Cheney gets swim meet wins versus Prosser, Grandview

The Cheney High School boys' swimming team returned to action as they took on Prosser and Grandview at a meet, Jan. 8, at the EWU pool.

Cheney took first and second place in several events, including a 1-2 finish in three events.

Scott Nadeau took first place in both the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly with times of 2:13.15 and 58.78, respectively. Caleb Prophet finished behind Nadeau in the 100 butterfly in 1:08.73.

Prophet came in first in the 50 freestyle at 25.84 while Brock Jorgeward came in second at 26.01.

Nick Steele took first in 200 freestyle in 2:02.27.

Trevor Babcock placed first in the 100 freestyle in 53.16 while Kit Foster came in second in 16.63. Babcock also came in first in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.13.

Foster, Spencer Hagel, Sam Schreieber and Arseniy Tepp teamed up for the 200 medley relay, coming in second in 2:14.69.

Babcock, Steele, Prophet and Nadeau came in first in the 200 medley relay at 1:40.38. The four also took first in the 400 free relay in 3:42.27

Blackhawk head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said the boys swam well considering the intensity of training during winter break.

"We had 85 percent best times today," Hochwalt said. "Coming off of the holidays, we had kids training hard, but we had some who missed days because they traveled. They did well."

The swimming team will travel to Yakima for their next meet against Handford and Richland, Jan. 18.

Hochwalt mentioned she would put some of the athletes in events where they have not competed as much during the season.

"Sometimes you put a kid in an event they normally don't swim in and they can surprise you," Hochwalt said. "It also gives me some flexibility when I'm deciding the lineup for districts."
