Blackhawks fall to Freeman, Lakeside in hoops action

The season’s second win is proving elusive for the Cheney High boys’ basketball team. The Blackhawks lost a pair of games last week to Northeast A League opponents, 76-57 Friday night at Freeman and 71-55 the next day at home to Lakeside.

Cheney dug themselves early holes by starting slowly in both games, outscored 21-9 by the Scotties and 17-9 at home against the Eagles in the first quarter. Freeman was helped by a 40-point performance from Jake Phipps, 24 coming from 3-point range, with only one other player in double figures, while Lakeside benefited from the 21 points of Cameron Gay in its win.

Alex Berman led Cheney in scoring with 17 points at Freeman, with Brett Wyborney adding 13 and Keenan Williams 12. Ty Graham led the Blackhawks with 13 points against the Eagles, with Williams adding 11, Wyborney nine and Berman eight.

Cheney wraps up its non-league slate Dec. 27 at the West Valley Invitational, taking on Bonners Ferry at 5:45 p.m. The Blackhawks open Great Northern League play Jan. 3 on the road at Deer Park, 4-3, who have opened the season with six of seven games against Northeast A opponents including wins over Medical Lake, Chewelah and Freeman, with losses to Newport, Lakeside and Riverside.
