Fouts, Schwekhardt sworn in at meeting

Two new members of the Medical Lake School Board officially entered their positions at the regular board meeting, Dec. 17.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Directors Kelly Fouts and Peggy Schweikhardt took an oath of office and were sworn into their positions on the school board.

Junior National Honor Society President Hanna Petek presented the board with the society’s fundraising idea “Cookies for Cancer.”

The students will sell Valentine’s Day cookies and cancer awareness bracelets for $1 each. The proceeds from the fundraiser will go to a childhood cancer organization.

The board approved the minutes for the Nov. 12 board work session and the Nov. 26 regular board meeting.

The board also approved the second reading of Policy 620 Bid Requirements, Resolution 13-14, the surplus of a 1986 F-250, the annual financial report, the high school and middle school fundraiser additions and the 2013-14 board goals.

Superintendent Dr. Pam Veltri presented a PowerPoint on ”Stands Based Grading.”

The presentation showed the difference between the Bell Curve and the J Curve grading system, which allows all students to succeed.

During her “Superintendent‘s Report,” Veltri encouraged the board to continue to call state legislators to keep impact aid out of sequestration.

Veltri also presented the board with a new “Fire Watch Procedures” handout that is in the beginning stages.

The purpose of the procedures to have an alternative plan in case the fire alarm in a school building is not working. She requested the board look at the procedures and contact her in case they have any suggestions.

Following Veltri’s report, the board moved to adjourn the meeting.
