Emmanuel Lutheran Church

Emmanuel Lutheran Church celebrates the fourth Sunday of Advent this Sunday, Dec. 22. Please join us for worship at 10:30 a.m.

The congregation of Emmanuel invites you to worship with us Tuesday, Dec. 24 at 10 p.m. for our traditional candlelight worship service. On this long winter night we gather to proclaim the coming of the light. Isaiah announces that the people who walk in darkness have seen a great light. Paul reminds us that the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all.

In the familiar account of Christ’s birth, the evening sky is bright with the heavenly host singing, “Glory to God in the highest.” Amid our broken world we proclaim that the prince of peace is born among us. God comes to us in human flesh – in Christ’s body and blood – so that we may be bearers of divine light to all the world.

Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Advent. Holy Communion is at 11 a.m. Rev. Christine Soule will preside. Please join us.

We invite the community to a Blue Christmas gathering at 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 20. This service is a time when we can acknowledge the “blue” feelings we may have during the Christmas season and offer these feelings to God. The service includes prayers, Scripture, and music that focus on hope and healing. There will be an opportunity to participate in “The Offering of Light” candle lighting ceremony.

Our Christmas Eve service will begin at 7 p.m. Rejoice with us in the coming of the Lord.

Attention college students. Come enjoy dinner with us each Monday evening at 5 p.m. in the parish hall. Following dinner, we will have a short Bible study and/or worship service. Come and bring a friend.

Under the direction of our new choir director, Davis Hill, choir rehearsals are each Thursday, 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. Join us.

Narcotics Anonymous meets in the Parish Hall each Tuesday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m.

Fellowship breakfast is each Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Join us for good food, fellowship and discussion. Come and bring a friend.

For your contemplation: “O Wisdom flowing from the mouth of the most high; reaching far and wide, disposing all things sweetly and mightily, come teach us the way of prudence.” Wisdom is the ability to see the world as God sees it. Try reading a newspaper today through the eyes of a God who was born in a stable, counted to be of no account, hounded by society from one place to another. Joan Chittister.

United Church of Christ

On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, the Cheney UCC will hold a Christmas Eve Carol Service at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary at 423 N. Sixth St. Y’all come.

 But first, a special offering for the Christmas Fund, to give emergency financial support to retired UCC pastors, will be taken during the Dec. 22 Sunday service at 10 a.m. Pastor David Krueger-Duncan will be preaching, and all are invited to attend. Childcare is provided in the Christian education building from 9:45-11:15 a.m. School-age children may attend the service with their parents.

Before church the men’s breakfast will be held at the Willow Springs Restaurant. Also, during the fellowship time after church friends new and old will share holiday plans over refreshments.

Many, many thanks to all those who remodeled the church and installed the new audio visual system, all those who organized and participated in “The Christmas Story” last Sunday, and all those who helped put on the community project, Christmas Gifts for Cheney Kids! The fine results of these projects have been heartwarming.

United Methodist Church

Please celebrate the fourth Sunday of Advent with us this week at the United Methodist Church. Worship is at 10 a.m. preceded by Sunday school classes at 9 a.m. The Rev. Terry Hall will lead the worship as we continue to prepare our hearts for Christmas.

Sunday afternoon the community is invited to a Christmas Cantata at the church at 4 p.m. The cantata will be presented by the Cheney UMC choir and Bells of the West Plains Handbell Choir. Come and hear the Christmas story in verse and song.

At 6 p.m. Sunday evening there is another worship service option. This service is open to all and is more conversational in style. Please join us at either or both services.

Christmas Eve there will be three worship services to choose from to celebrate the birth of Jesus. At 5 p.m. there will be a service geared specifically toward children. The 7 p.m. service will be a traditional candlelight service and at 10:30 p.m. a “Blue Christmas” service will be offered designed for those who are grieving or feeling down around the holiday season. Choose the service or services that work best for you and be our guest this Christmas Eve.
