Cheney runners qualify for nationals

Three Cheney members of the Spokane Mercury cross country club have qualified for national competition Dec. 14 out of regional action Nov. 23 at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

Beckett Schoenleber captured the 9-10 Division Boys title with a time of 11 minutes, 29.22 seconds on the 3,000 kilometer course, finishing just under eight seconds ahead of second-place Maximilian Anderson of North Idaho. Bas Holland finished 10th in the 11-12 Division boys 3K race with a time of 11:00.70 while Samantha Habegger also qualified with a fourth-place finish in the 8 and Under Division Girls 2K race with a time of 9:11.14.

Also competing at Monmouth were Sheamus Mahoney, 25th in the 13-14 Division Boys 4K run in 14:01.28, Megan Habegger, 77th in the 11-12 Division Girls 3K in 13:50.90 and Hannah Spakousky and Jolene Whiteley, who finished 24th and 43rd respectively in the 13-14 Division Girls 4K with times of 15:37.57 and 16:21.82.

The USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships take place Saturday, Dec. 14, at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas.
