Cheney's Samantha Habegger reacts to edging out Mercury teammate Abraham Little at the finish of the 8 and under girls and boys race at USATF Inland Northwest Association Cross Country Championships Saturday at Mead High School.
Seven Cheney runners will be making a trip this weekend to the Portland, Ore.-area with their Spokane Mercury teammates to compete in USA Track and Field Region 13 Cross Country Championships at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. All the runners were among the top 35 individuals or top-five teams in USATF Inland Northwest Association competition last Saturday at Mead High School.
Cheney's Beckett Schoenleber and Bas Holland captured meet titles in their respective 3-kilometer boys' divisions at Mead. Schoenleber broke away from the field midway through the 9-10 Division race to win with a time of 11 minutes, 21.10 seconds, 20 seconds ahead of North Idaho's Maximilian Anderson.
Holland got out front and maintained a comfortable lead in winning the 11-12 Division with a time of 10:56. Sheamus Mahoney turned in a time of 14:44.80 to finish fourth overall, second in points for his Mercury team in the 4K 13-14 Division race.
In girls competition, Samantha Habegger finished second in the 2K 8 and Under Division with a time of 9:23.70 while sister Megan Habegger finished 15th in the 3K 11-12 Division in a time of 17:32. Mercury runners claimed the top four spots in the 4K 13-14 Division race, with Cheney's Jolene Whiteley second in 16:12 and Hannah Spakousky fourth in 16:19.70.
Runners competing Saturday at Western Oregon University are hoping for a shot at the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships Saturday, Dec. 14, at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas.
