Old Pinewood Derby cars escaped from dusty shelves throughout the West Plains, as young and old Boy Scouts gathered Oct. 29 to celebrate the 100-year partnership between the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. All BSA troops in the region were invited to gather at the church buildings in Cheney and West Plains to commemorate this achievement.
Members from troops 318, 322, 329, 356, and 381 had a great time racing cars, playing tug of war, looking at Scouting memorabilia, eating hot dogs and many other activities. A live broadcast from Salt Lake City capped off the evening. The broadcast included reenactments based on the early days of Scouting in America as well as speakers representing the Boy scouts of America Head Council.
The event proved a great success in achieving the goal that was to promote the Scouting programs in our area and to encourage local families to join a troop.
