Cheney's cross country teams wrapped up their regular season with a pair of wins against visiting Clarkston last Wednesday.
The Blackhawks' boys cruised to a 17-51 win while the girls were equally strong in downing the Bantams 18-48 on the three-mile course at Salnave Park.
Kyle Lerch led the boys, finishing first with a time of 16 minutes, 29.8 seconds, followed by Nick Steele second in 16:47.7 and Kameron Galm third in 16:58. Freshman Kaleb Lerch was fifth at 17:58.2 while senior Dallin Olson wrapped up Cheney's scoring by placing sixth in 18:01.1.
Carson Kerr was seventh in 18:08.4 and Matt Christianson placed eighth in 18:08.3 to complete Cheney's varsity seven. All seven times were season-best marks.
Mariah Brenton, Claire Lunde and Johanna Sherman finished 1-2-3 to lead the Cheney girls, with Brenton finishing in 20:47, Lunde at 21:00.9 and Sherman in 21:09.6. Shannen Gladden was fifth in 21:38 and freshman Alecia Brooks was seventh in 22:26.3 to wrap up Cheney scoring, with freshman Lexi Brooks eighth in 22:51.6 and Linsay Sweitzer ninth in 23:02.5.
Lunde, Sherman, Gladden, both Brooks girls and Sweitzer all turned in season-best times.
Both the boys and girls teams finish the regular season in the middle of the Great Northern League standings, with the girls at 4-2 and the boys 3-3. Cheney now turns its attention to District 7 competition this Saturday at Plantes Ferry State Park in Spokane Valley with the top two teams and top 10 individuals heading to state Nov. 9 in Pasco.
Both teams were missing runners due to injuries or other schedule obligations, for the boys Steaven Zachman and Mason Van Stone and for the girls Kelsey Schwendiman and Mattie McNair. Head coach Jay Martin hoped all of them would be back in the varsity lineup by Saturday, where teams can enter up to nine runners and then pick their top seven.
"We're kind of looking at who's healthy," Martin said. "If they're not healthy, we're moving the next kid up."
District 7 competitions include not only 2A but also 1A and B schools. The 2A girls' race begins at 1:40 with the boys following at 2:20 p.m.
