Blackhawks' runners take on W. Valley, Colville at Plantes Ferry

Cheney High's cross country teams squared off with West Valley and Colville in Great Northern League competition last Wednesday at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane Valley.

The Blackhawks girls notched a pair of forfeit wins as neither the Eagles nor Indians fielded enough runners for varsity teams. The boys notched a split, easily defeating Colville 24-32 but getting edged by West Valley 26-29.

Mariah Brenton led the Cheney girls, finishing second with a time of 20 minutes, 47 seconds, 51 seconds behind West Valley's Skay McCall. Johanna Sherman was second, followed by Kelsey Schwendiman and Mattie McNair. Clair Lunde wrapped up Cheney's top five runners, who posted a 1-5 gap of 1:48, with Lexi Brooks and Shannen Gladden completing the varsity finishers.

Kyle Lerch led the Blackhawks boys, finishing third in 17 minutes flat, 35 seconds behind West Valley's Skylar Ownicek and 36 seconds back of race winner Kevin Carpenter of Colville. Kameron Galm was three seconds behind Lerch in fourth, with Nick Steele sixth, Carson Kerr 12th and Dallin Olson 13th, completing the top five, with freshman Matt Christianson rounding out the varsity placers. The boys posted a 1-5 gap of 1:44.

Cheney wrapped up its regular season GNL meets this Wednesday, hosting Clarkston at Salnave Park. Both boys and girls squads will get some rest before preparing for District 7 competition Saturday, Nov. 2 at Plantes Ferry.
