If the Eastern Washington University hockey team is to challenge Selkirk College there were two things that became evident following the Eagles 7-2 loss in their season opening game last Friday at the Castlegar, British Columbia Recreation Complex.
The Eagles will get a chance to see if what they needed to get fixed got done this Saturday, Oct. 12 when they have their home opener at the University Recreation Center rink with a 7 p.m. faceoff against the University of Victoria.
The defending British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League champion Saints scored four, man-advantage goals Friday, two in both the second and third periods to break open a close 3-2 game after the Eagles got first-period goals from Beau Walker and Paxton Bell.
“We gave up way too many power play goals and spent way to much time in the (penalty) box,” EWU head coach Bill Shaw said.
Cody Fidgett scored the final three goals for Selkirk who launched 47 shots on EWU goaltender Jason Greenwell.
“We need to have better start in each period and make a bligger commitment to physical play,” Shaw said.
In observance of Breast cancer Awareness Month Saturday’s game will be “Pink in the Rink” with special activities planned. A junior varsity game Friday versus the University of Idaho, also at 7 p.m.
EWU’s women’s team, back after a year’s hiatus, opens their season with a 9 a.m. contest Saturday versus a team from Spokane. The EWU JV team will also have a rematch Saturday at 1 p.m. versus Idaho.
