Cards go 2-0 in volleyball play

Medical Lake volleyball did something last week they had not done in quite some time when the Cardinals went 2-0 in a pair of matches – both on the road.

Beginning last Tuesday with a 3-1 Northeast A League victory at Kettle Falls, the Cards ended with a 3-1 nonleague win Thursday over the 2B Liberty Lancers.

“It was a long trip up to Kettle Falls (0-4 NEA, 1-6 all games)but it was totally worth it,” head coach Amanda Higgins said of the win by scores of 25-18, 25-15, 20-25, 25-21. “It was another team effort.”

Sydney Kelly contributed 24 assists for the Cardinals (2-3, 5-5). “Cami Tinsler had a great night with consistent passes on defense that added up to 11 digs,” Higgins said.

After falling in their opening match to Liberty 19-25, Medical Lake reeled off three straight victories 25-19, 25-20, 25-9. Kelly again topped the stats with 24 assists while Tinsler added 14 assists. Cassidy Hagel and Cheyenne Wollitz each had seven kills.

“What a great way to end a week; we swept the week ending with two more wins,” Higgins said. “Even though this was a nonleague game, we took advantage and worked on perfecting our defense.”

Medical Lake is at home this week against Freeman (4-2, 5-2) (Tuesday, Oct. 1) and Newport (1-4, 2-4) , tonight (Thursday, Oct. 3) at 6:30 p.m.
