The Cheney High cross country teams did something last Wednesday they hadn’t done in quite a few years – open up their league seasons with a pair of losses.

In competition at East Valley between the host Knights and Deer Park it was the Blackhawks coming up on the short end of the scores. The boys just missed nabbing a win against either or both schools, losing 26-29 to East Valley and 27-29 to Deer Park while the girls fell 23-32 and 24-31 respectively.

Kyle Lerch led the boys with a third-place finish overall in a time of 16 minutes, 48.53 seconds. Kameron Galm was fifth in 17:14.22, followed by Steaven Zachman eighth in 17:29.35, Nick Steele 12th in 17:48.11 and Carson Kerr 15th in 18:41.88 to wrap up the Blackhawks scoring five. Dallin Olson and Matt Christianson were 18th and 19th in 18:59.21 and 19:01.65.

East Valley’s Scott Kopczynski and Chad Stevens went 1-2 in 16:13.34 and 16:37.30 to lead the Knights, who placed three runners in the top 10. Deer Park was paced by Kody Turner in fourth at 16:49.80, but placed all five scoring runners in the top 11 to knock off East Valley 28-41 en route to a 2-0 start in Great Northern League action.

Cheney senior Mariah Brenton had the highest finish of any Blackhawk, placing second behind East Valley’s Brittany Aquino with a time of 20:52.63. Johanna Sherman was fourth in 21:47.62, with Claire Lunde, Mattie McNair and Alexis Brooks finishing 13-15 in 23:27.48, 23:45.51 and 23:47.76.

Led by Moriah Duenich in third at 21:39.50, Deer Park placed all five scoring runners in the top 10 to down East Valley, with three runners in the top 10, 23-32.

Cheney has an opportunity to find the league win column this week, traveling to Pullman Wednesday, results next week. The Greyhound girls knocked off Clarkston and West Valley to go to 2-0 in the GNL while the boys earned a split, beating the Bantams but losing to the Eagles last Wednesday.
