Cheney volleyball off to strong start at 2-0

The Cheney High School volleyball team is off to a strong start after its first week of regular seasaon play, doing well right out of the gate.

Last week, the team came up with two wins and sits atop the GNL standings 1-0 (2-0 all games). The team hasn’t yet lost a set in its regular schedule.

The strong play started against North Central last week,

“We started out a little slow, but did a really good job of controlling the match,” head coach Brianne Lowe said.

Senior Ashley Seiler led the Blackhawks in kills with 13, and senior Kinsey Pease led the team with 24 assists. Senior Morgan Davis led Cheney with five aces, although NC’s Melia Conant had six to lead the game.

“Our service struggled in North Central, so we worked on that Wednesday, and it was much improved against Colville,” Lowe said.

Their first win against a GNL opponent this year proved to be one of the best matches Lowe said she’s seen in her time at Cheney.

“Colville match was just a great team effort,” Lowe said. “It was definitely the best we’ve played together as a team, a functioning unit, since I have been here. It was just a really cohesive effort, and I think that’s why we won in three sets, is because we played so well together.”

Seiler again led the team with 16 kills, and Pease once again did well with 21 assists.

While the score reflects a six-point gap in the third set against Colville, Lowe said the game was much closer in reality. Senior Jaceya Prophet led a final charge with three aces right at the end of that third set, sealing the win.

“That was probably the most exciting part of the set,” Lowe said. “It gave us the lead.”

Coming up, the Blackhawks face East Valley Thursday, Sept. 19 and West Valley Tuesday, Sept. 24, which is also Blackhawk Spirit Night. Scores from the Sept. 17 game were not available at press time.
