Sept. 25, 2003

While not completely official just yet, Cheney’s voters were still saying yes to approving funding for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department through an added utilities tax. Yes votes were ahead 847-600 or by a 59-41 percent margin.

A longtime tradition of a community Christmas tree in Medical Lake’s Coney Island Park was getting the attention of the City Council as citizens sought to replace a tree that was damaged in 2002, and later removed.

Supporters of a new Fairchild Heritage Museum hoped to have their new facility open for business on property near Spokane International Airport by sometime in 2005.

Dur Till contributed two spectacular returns, one on the opening kickoff for 52 yards that set up Medical Lake’s first touchdown, and another 57-yard punt return for a touchdown as the Cardinals won a 40-14 nonleague football game over Kellogg, Idaho.

Sept. 23, 1993

The Cheney School Board met in special session to approve the $1.09 million bid from Panco Construction for additions and renovations to Windsor Elementary School.

Eastern Washington University President Marshall Drummond addressed an estimated 500 faculty members, employees and students at the annual All-University Breakfast.

Betz Elementary also welcomed some 800 students and parents to a school barbecue. The event was staged to serve as a grand opening to show off additions and improvements to the school.

Morris Air was advertising cut rate airfares on flights from Spokane to Seattle for as low as $24 each way with Boeing 737 jet service.

Cheney High’s football team traveled to Richmond, British Columbia where the Blackhawks defeated Steveston High 49-15 as Chad Randall scored twice on runs of 20 and 35 yards.

Sept. 22, 1983

Cheney School District and members of the Cheney Education Association agreed to terms of a two-year contract that would end a teachers strike that began Sept. 1. One of the items of the new contract dealt with class size reduction of two students in kindergarten and elementary grades and one student in both junior and senior high.

Cheney’s second century of existence was set to begin Oct. 2 with a variety of events including balloon rides, entertainment and food.

The first B-52G aircraft, modified to carry air-launched cruise missiles, arrived at Fairchild Air Force Base recently.

Cheney held off a rally by Medical Lake and posted a 25-20 football victory in a game played on Saturday afternoon and televised live on a local station. Mike Bunting’s last-minute interception sealed the victory. John Williford led Cardinal receivers with three receptions, including an 88-yard touchdown play.

The Four Corners Grange and its “Water, Hub of the Universe,” display was chosen as the top entry at the Spokane Interstate Fair. The “Water is Wealth,” exhibit presented by the Windsor Grange was the runner-up.

Also winning awards, but this time at the Northeast Washington Fair in Colville, was Cheney High School’s FFA livestock judging entry, which included John Phillips, Richard Meyer, Les Williams and Dale Lehn.

Fresh off their 34-14 football victory over the Odessa Tigers where Mike Liddell’s 88-yard touchdown run was the highlight, the Cheney Blackhawks were preparing to face powerful Mead High which had defeated Ephrata 42-0.
