Cardinals collect podium finish at Coaster Classic

Medical Lake ran right with some of the biggest schools in the region at last Saturday’s Coaster Classic cross country invitational at Silverwood Theme Park where the Cardinal boys finished third and girls 10th.

“This was our best year ever at the Coaster Classic,” head coach Gene Blankenship said of his boys’ finish behind Idaho 5A school Capital (44 points) and 3A University (53) of the Spokane Valley and Greater Spokane League.

The Cardinals (133) took 35 runners and all but three PR’d on the 5K course he said. “We outperformed 2012,” Blankenship said.

Junior Micah Dingfield finished third in the boys race with a time of 16 minutes, 3 seconds. Capital’s Zach Wiberg led boys’ runners with a 15:54 and U-Hi’s Taylor Smith was second at 15:56. Domenic Rehm finished 16th at 16:32.3.

Medical Lake beat defending Northeast A League champ, Lakeside, “But we beat them last year,” Blankenship said. The Cardinals were the top finishing 1A team.

Borah, also from Boise, won the girls crown with 84 points, edging Capital with 88. Northeast A League’s Lakeside was third and the top 1A team with 104 points. Medical Lake finished 10th at 231 with Sakaiya McCoy clocking a 20:10.9 good for 17th behind Borah’s Sarah Christianson’s 18:48.4 who was the individual champ.
