Cheney voters were about to receive their ballots that would decide whether or not to fund the revival of the Parks and Recreation Department with an increase in utility taxes.
With the help of Ducks Unlimited ducks on the West Plains were about to receive a new sanctuary located on 238 acres of land adjacent to the Cheney’s wastewater treatment plant.
After providing services for some 4,000 area residents Planned Parenthood was going to open a clinic in Cheney.
Senior quarterback Keith Schmidt scored a pair of touchdowns as Medical Lake rolled to a 28-7 football victory over rival Cheney in the season opening game for both teams. The Cards had 287 yards on the ground and 404 total yards.

Cheney civic leader Fred Johns, the Vice President of Business and Finance for Eastern Washington University and a former 20-year member of the City Council, passed away at his home. Johns was 68.
Gas prices across Eastern Washington were staying level at about $1.19 a gallon for self-service regular unleaded and $1.39 for full-service unleaded.
Following a decent performance in their jamboree where they played both Lewis and Clark and Shadle Park from the Greater Spokane League to scoreless ties, the Cheney Blackhawks football team was preparing to open their season at Moscow, Idaho
EWU’s football team was smarting following a 34-13 loss to Northeast Louisiana and had a bye week to recuperate prior to a trip to meet Cal State Sacramento. One of the key injuries was suffered by Eagles’ lineman, Tom Ackerman.

Cheney teachers voted to go on strike following the breakdown in talks Sept. 1 with the school district. The school district later sought an injunction against the walkout by an estimated 175 educators in the district.
Cheney head football coach Tom Oswald crossed picket lines in the Cheney teachers strike in order to prepare his team for their game against Connell.
EWU’s football team was set to travel to Boise to open its 1983 season against the Broncos, one of eight games against Division I teams on a 10-game schedule. It was the fifth season for head coach Dick Zornes whose teams have beat 28-11 under his guidance.

As of Sept. 5, 1963 enrollment at Cheney schools totaled 2,193, a drop of 24 students, or 1 percent from the same time the previous year. Enrollment of 497 at the high school was an increase of just over five percent.
Bernard Kingsley and Pat McManus, faculty members at Eastern Washington State College, reported they had just successfully negotiated both the Tea Cup and Rock Island rapids on the Columbia River below Trail, British Columbia. It was part of a multi-day canoe trip the two men, along with their nephews, Mike Gass and Richard Goodman, undertook.
Head coach and school athletic director Dave Holmes expected 75 candidates to practice in advance of EWSC’s football season. Holmes came to the school earlier in the summer after a highly successful high school career at Spokane’s North Central High School.
