Cheney council OKs AmeriCorps spots
Keri MacDonald awarded municipal clerk’s certification
In the only action item on a light agenda Tuesday night, Cheney’s City Council approved authorizing Mayor Tom Trulove to sign a memorandum of understanding with Educational Service District 101 to create two AmeriCorps position for the 2013-2014 school year. Both positions will be in the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
Parks and Recreation Director Paul Simmons originally presented a proposal for five AmeriCorps positions to the council back in May. Budget cuts to ESD101 trimmed that back to two, he said.
Each position requires 1,700 hours, minimum of 36 hours per week, be put in between Sept. 1, 2013 to July 31, 2014. Total for the two positions is $16,000, which Simmons said is covered by several grants the department has received.
Despite the reduced number of AmeriCorps positions, Simmons said the department would still be able to maintain the service levels needed to run their programs.
In other news, Finance Department Director Cindy Niemeier presented deputy city clerk Keri MacDonald with her Certified Municipal Clerk certification from the Washington Municipal Clerks Association. Niemeier said MacDonald had been going through the very rigorous and demanding training to receive the certification.
“It’s a coveted award,” she told the council.
Niemeier also introduced the rest of the Finance Department staff to the council during the meeting, acknowledging their hard work on behalf of the city.
