The Medical Lake City Council made two crucial steps toward seeing a skateboard park become reality, including authorizing the purchase of some discounted equipment from Skatewaves.

Eastern Washington University was reviewing personal safety protocols following the recent rape of a student in Dryden Hall.

The investigation continued following the armed robbery of the Cheney McDonald’s. Cheney Police Chief Greg Lopes said a man first confronted an employee outside the restaurant on 2324 First St. and then came inside where he displayed a handgun and took an undisclosed amount of cash.

The Medical Lake boys went through all four weekends of their summer basketball tournament undefeated, beating both 4A and 3A teams from across the state.

The Cheney City Council unanimously approved raising electrical utility rates for the community by 10.4 percent in an effort to cover some of the costs associated with the Bonneville Power Administration’s 15.7 percent increase that takes effect in October.

EWU’s board of trustees heard input from some 70 people as they considered issues related to the school’s increased presence in Spokane.Among the items discussed was the proposed relocation of the university’s business school to Spokane.

Knowing that population will continue to increase in the area, leaders from across the area known as the West Plains Coalition of Governments met to discuss the idea of establishing a new regional water system.

The first annual West Plains Community Fair was scheduled for Aug. 14 at the Cheney Rodeo Grounds.

The Cheney School District and the Cheney Education Association reached an impasse in contract negotiations and will have to await the involvement of a mediator to solve the problem.

Following repairs of the main runway, B-52 bombers from Fairchild Air Force Base returned home from their temporary deployment to Moses Lake and the former Larson Air Force Base.

The city of Medical Lake agreed to an offer from the Washington Department of Social and Health Services to spend $50,000 for fire protection.

Players from Cheney and Medical Lake had begun preparations for the annual alumni football game set for Aug. 19 at Cheney’s Fisher Field. John Gianandrea would coach the former Cardinals while Cheney would be coached by Don Case.

Firefighters from Spokane County Fire District No. 3 were busy as numerous blazes broke out in the Cheney area destroying both grass, timber and a storage shed valued at $2,000. Most of the fires broke out following a lightning storm.

Newly appointed director E.H. Wagoner was scheduled to attend his first meeting as a member of the Cheney School Board.

A crowd of 150 people attended the fourth annual Spokane County Dairy Family of the Year Field Day held at the farm owned by Bob Reitmeier in Medical Lake.

A registered Jersey cow owned by David Eccles from Medical Lake recently received a 100,000 pound Milk Award from the American Jersey Cattle Club in Columbus, Ohio.
