Chris Dunn

Cheney High School announced in a news release that it has hired Chris Dunn to be the new high school boys’ basketball coach. Dunn replaces Joel Soter who left after two seasons to take the head coaching job at Rogers High School.

He’ll likely be able to give Dunn some help as the Washington State University graduate teaches math at the District 81 school in Hillyard. Dunn, who is the son of former Cheney School District Superintendent Mike Dunn, played basketball at Shadle Park High School.

He has served as an assistant coach for the Riverside football and basketball teams, and was the Rams boys and girls track and field head coach. He guided Riverside to a Northeast A League championship for both teams in 2013 along with fourth- and second-place finishes for the boys and girls respectively at the WIAA state 1A track meet in May.

In the release, CHS athletic director Jim Missel listed building relationships with student-athletes, motivating them to maximum potential through hard work and dedication, organizing and leading programs that foster growth and success in students’ athletically and academically and providing a challenging and rewarding high school experience as some of the qualities Dunn brings to the Blackhawks’ head position.
