Cheney’s A Legion baseball team hopes to end a two-game league losing streak but the challenge might be a tall one considering that pair of games came against South Division leading and undefeated Freeman, 10-0.
Those games were played this past Monday at home and Tuesday in Freeman.
The SummerHawks opened their schedule June 18 with a split against Northern Division Chewelah, winning 9-1 before falling in a wild slugfest, 13-11.
“The first game the bats didn't come alive until late in the game but when they did we were able to take over and win in a blowout,” coach Kent Weatherbee said.
Brannon Pederson had three hits, Chance Gleave and Chris Fuentes each had two hits.
“We also had a great pitching performance from Gleave who gave up just one run in five innings,” Weatherbee said. “They had a lot of trouble making any kind of good contact off of him.”
In the nightcap Cheney fell behind 6-0 in the first inning and trailed 8-0 by the second. “We did eventually get the bats going and battled to cut the lead down to four twice,” Weatherbee said.
Cheney faced a 13-6 deficit going into the last inning but got a nice comeback started. “We battled in that inning scoring five runs and getting the tying run on first,” Weatherbee said. But a well-hit ball was tracked down to end the game. Trey Martin and Kyle Jones each had two hits.
In last Monday’s 9-2 loss at Ferris, “Not a whole lot went right for us,” Weatherbee said. “We had chances in the first and third innings but were stifled by some bad luck having line drive double plays in both of those inning.”
“I don't think we ever recovered from that,” Weatherbee said. Gleave came on in relief and pitched four very solid innings giving up two runs. Brayden Butikofer had three hits while Kyle Jones had two.
Cheney split a nonleague doubleheader with Chewelah, June 26, losing the opener 4-2 before rolling 11-1 in the nightcap.
“The first game we had a really good pitching performance by Logan Pratt,” Weatherbee said. “Logan was almost unhittable for the first three innings but gave up four runs in the fourth, but still ended up striking out six in just three and 2/3 innings.”
Cheney was patient and hit the ball very well in key spots, Weatherbee said. Trey Martin had two hits, two RBIs, including a double, scored two runs and reached base three times. Pederson had two hits and an RBI. Chris Fuentes had two hits and scored a run.
“We were also backed by a phenomenal pitching performance by Jacob Whiteley," Weatherbee said.
