Cheney residents on five residential streets were going to have to deal with construction equipment as crews spent $200,000 to refurbish Union and H streets, plus First through Seventh.

Medical Lake’s long-awaited north end wastewater treatment facility was just 45 days away from completion following City Council’s approval of a pair of contracts for a new lift station and the installation of nearly 4,000 feet of new piping.

The City of Cheney was preparing to take over the Cheney Recycling Center July 2 when the existing contract expires.

Cheney High School soccer player Jessie Retan was selected to be part of a touring team that was to play on a United Soccer Academy squad and would tour Sweden and England.

Helen Boots, a Cheney native and lifelong resident, was recently elected president of the Washington State American Legion.

The Fish Lake Trail was on the list to receive a $410,000 share of $5 million in state Department of Transportation funding. Construction of the paved trail was not likely to begin until 1994 Cheney public works director Paul Schmidt said.

Vandals hit a variety of places in Medical Lake recently including the D.A.R.E. van that had its tires slashed. Then, following Founder’s Day festivities, Waterfront Park restrooms were damaged when a sink was broken and doors ripped from the hinges.

With four victories in their last five games, Cheney’s American Legion baseball team moved its record to above .500 at 8-6. The Spokane Federal Credit Union-sponsored team and a big comback in a 9-5 win, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth and a single in the sixth. Darrin McComas got the win on the mound.

Cheney’s central dispatch center, a facility designed to coordinate all area emergency communications for the city and and EWU, was moved to the city’s police station.

Plans were announced to convert the current EWU Student Health Center and Emergency room into an urgent care center.

Summer school enrollment at EWU was running 230 students ahead of the previous year as 3,070 students had enrolled.

Two Cheney Roadrunners’ track team members won events the state Special Olympics. Aaron Hand took first in Frisbee accuracy while Rita Chavers was the best competitor in the 200-meter run.

Area children were excited for the opening of Cheney’s new municipal swimming pool, but crews ran into unforseen delays because of rock.

Eastern Washington State College continued to be the city of Cheney’s best customer when it came to purchase of utilities such as electricity, water an sewer services. EWSC paid the city more than $58,000 through the year including $26,000 for electricity and $32,000 for water and sewer.

EWSC announced the addition of Brent Wooten to the staff of head football coach Dave Holmes. Wooten played for the University of Washington on the Huskies’ 1960 and 1961 Rose Bowl teams and came from Columbia Basin Junior College.
