Council renews EWU ad contract

The Cheney City Council agreed to a $10,000 annual renewal of a contract with Eastern Washington University Athletics for advertising of the city’s Light Department at university athletic contests.

Light Department director Joe Noland said the money comes the Bonneville Power Administration, with the city receiving a budget of $135,000, 20 percent of which must be spent on advertising. The contract with Eastern provides signs, radio and game announcements and other forms of communication urging people to inquire about and/or participate in the department’s conservation program.

Noland told the council that the department also provides sponsorships to some Cheney School District teams as well as helping sponsor events such as Cheney Jubilee along with Winterfest and Mayfest.

“There must be some advertising associated with this,” Noland said. “We can’t arbitrarily hand money out.”

The council also unanimously approved acceptance of a $29,000 grant from the Empire Health Foundation to extend and expand the temporary community obesity prevention coordinator position. Coordinator Dane’ Standish’s focus is on advancing the mission and goals of Let’s Move Cheney through specific projects outlined in the agreement with Empire Health Foundation.

The council also approved the second and third readings and final passage of Ordinance W-08, adopting the 2012 International Code including Washington State Amendments for building and construction within the city. Finally, the council approved the selection of four new members to the city’s Hotel/Motel Tax Committee, which currently meets once a year to oversee dispersal of hotel/motel taxes to organizations whose events help bring visitors to Cheney to be taxed.

Councilman Doug Nixon was elected committee chair, with Holiday Inn Express co-owner Debbie Anderson named as the hotel/motel representative. EWU employees and longtime community supporters Lisa Poplawski and Karen Wichman round out the committee.
