Six CHS students receive Spokane Scholar award

Six Cheney High School students were among the 141 seniors from public and private Spokane-area schools honored Monday night at the 21st annual Spokane Scholars Foundation Banquet held at the Spokane Convention Center. High school principals, counselors and teachers nominate students based on their accomplishments in one of six areas.

The Cheney High School 2013 Spokane Scholar nominees were Kelsey Fillmore, English; Christopher Knox, fine arts; Hayden Gerstenkorn, mathematics; Sophie Schwalbe, science; Elizabeth Gill, social studies and Rebecca Stevens, world languages.

Since 1993 the Spokane Scholars Foundation has awarded $1 million in scholarships to more than 2,000 top students in Spokane County. Of the six Cheney students, Schwalbe received a $4,000 scholarship in science.
