Cheney Waves swimmers travel to regional championships

Sakaiya McCoy and Makenzie Norman advance to Zones

Four Cheney Waves swimmers competed in Federal Way, Wash., March 22-24, at the Pacific Northwest Age Group Regional (AGR) championships. This event is a qualifying swim meet for the northwestern section of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska.

One hundred seventy four teams brought over 1,700 of their fastest age group swimmers to compete at the King County Aquatics Center. Qualifying times for this meet are difficult to achieve and generally each event has only the top 35-40 regional swimmers.

Sakaiya McCoy, 14, Medical Lake, competed in three of the longer events, finishing 400-yard individual medley in 21st place, the 500-yard freestyle in 20th place and a personal best time. She also had a remarkable time of 17:53.81 in the 1,650-freestyle for a fourth place finish and a personal best time and a team record. McCoy is qualified for these three events at Western Senior Zones in Clovis, Calif. the first week in August.

Jared Geschke, 11, Cheney, swam for the first time at this meet. He had personal best times in his events, the 50-yard breaststroke for 23rd place, and the 100 yard breaststroke for 22nd place.

Makenzie Norman, 13, Cheney, swam personal bests in each of her events, including the 50-yard freestyle for a fifth place finish and a USA Swimming national ranking of 106 for 13-year females. She also swam the 100 freestyle for fifth place, the 200 freestyle for sixth place, 500 freestyle for 12th place and the 100-yard butterfly for 15th place.

Norman also qualified for some events at Western Senior Zones, but most likely will attend Western Age Group (14 and under) Zones where she will compete with the best swimmers in her age group from the 13 western states. They will be held in Roseville, Calif. the second week in August.

Also swimming his first Age Group Regionals was Matthew Norman, 10, Cheney, who qualified in the Boys 10 and under 50-yard butterfly. He just missed out on a personal best time and finished in 29th place.

Cheney Waves swimmers practice Monday through Friday at the Eastern Washington University Aquatic Center from 3:30-5 p.m. Many swim levels are available from beginner to the senior level. New swimmers or those interested in joining the team are invited to visit the team website at http://www.spokanewaves.org or call coach Kevin Wang at 230-7006 for more information.
