Cardinals' bats are red hot in doubleheader sweep at Newport

Medical Lake got off to a fast start in its 2013 Northeast A League baseball season last Saturday with a pair of stout offensive performances.

The Cardinals scored nine runs in the first inning of a 14-4 win in the opening game of a doubleheader and then got even better in the 21-1 win over the Grizzlies in the nightcap, scoring 10 runs in their first at bat.

“We had a great week of practice and everything translated onto the field,” Cardinals’ head coach Kerry Kelly said. Taylor Dormaier and Roman Kissack threw the ball very well.

Kissack gave up just one hit through his three innings work in the five- inning first game. In the second game Dormaier, Aaron Sunde, Kasey Kelly and Adam Paulson each worked the mound and scattered two Newport hits. Connor Cranston delivered three RBIs while Adam Paulson and Kissack each drove in a pair.

“We got on top early in both of those games and it was an opportunity to look at some pitchers,” Kerry Kelly said.

In the second game Kasey Kelly drove in five runs and scored four more. His first-inning double accounted for three RBIs. Paulson and Kissack each had four RBIs.

“Kasey, Adam and Roman Kissack hit the ball well, hit for power,” Kelly said. “Kasey hit three rockets.”

And Paulson, Kelly confessed, “Adam’s not always been known as a hitter, he’s always been an exceptional pitcher.” At Newport, Paulson did a good job of putting the ball in play in his spot hitting fifth, Kelly said.

Medical Lake scored three more runs in the second and four each in the third and fourth innings. A Kissack double gave him two of his four RBIs in the top of the second. He mirrored that effort in the third with a 2 RBI double.

Brayden Hale was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Dormaier was 2-for-2 with a pair or runs scored. Rushfeldt also had two RBIs. Tim Sersig also scored three times. “Offensively, a lot of people got hits,” Kelly said.

“After what we went through last year, it’s twice as good,” Kelly said. “We’ve tripled our wins from last year.”

Medical Lake had a pair of NEA contests this week, Tuesday and Wednesday at home versus Freeman and Kettle Falls before spring break. They resume play Saturday, April 6 at home with the doubleheader versus Freeman.
