Cheney's Chernega wins MLK essay award

Martin Luther King essay contest winner Aleksander Chernega poses with his certificate with Cheney Rotary president Steve Schwalbe.

The 12 Rotary Clubs of Spokane teamed with the Diversity Offices of School District 81 and Gonzaga University to host a Martin Luther King essay contest beginning this year.

The Cheney Rotary Club of Cheney sponsored the competition at Cheney High School, receiving many essays and selecting one winner: senior Aleksander Chernega.

For writing the best essay tying Martin Luther King’s ideals to Rotary’s Four-Way Test – Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? – Chernega won $250.

A certificate and cash were presented in at English class on March 18 by Rotary Club of Cheney president Steve Schwalbe.
