Cheney rebounds for wins over GSL's Shadle, Rogers

The Cheney boys’ tennis team rebounded from a rough start, winning both of its matches last week against Shadle Park and Rogers.

Head coach Jesse Erickson said the match against Shadle Park, which Cheney won 4-3, went down to the wire. In singles matches, Cheney won only one out of four, with Solomon Springberry defeating Jimmy Chow 7-5, 5-7, 6-1. Erickson said Springberry handled pressure well throughout each match, especially in the third.

Doubles against Shadle Park proved to be a bit stronger, with two of three doubles duos winning their matches.

The doubles players continued their solid performance against Rogers the next day in a home match Erickson said. Cheney led the entire day, defeating Rogers 6-1.

No doubt the best doubles performance of the day came from Ben Sanchez and Collan Kay, who shut down their opponents 6-0 and 6-0. Erickson said the duo hustled on every shot, and led the way for the team.

Also impressive during Thursday’s match against Rogers was Nathaniel Brewster, who continued a fundamentally strong performance from the previous day. Against Rogers, he won 6-2, 6-0.

“He was doing what we’ve been working on, and was moving his opponent from side to side,” Erickson said.

Brewster also played a 2 hour, 45 minute match against Cody Knudsen, which he ended up winning 5-7, 7-6 (9-7 in overtime after being down 4-6) and 6-6.

“You hate to see their player get injured after a match like that,” Erickson said.

The lengthy battle saw Brewster earn five aces along the way.

“(Brewster) had all the momentum going into the tiebreaker,” Erickson said.

The young Cheney team is now 2-0 in the season, and faced Mount Spokane and University High School this week. Results from those matches weren’t available at press time.
